Position Summary
Department and University ResponsibilitiesThe primary responsibilities of the full-time Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program (DMS) Coordinator in the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences are teaching and service. Teaching involves classroom, laboratory or clinical courses at the undergraduate level. Service is rendered through administrative and committee responsibilities at the Program, School and University levels and through community and professional activities. Faculty pursue personal development through continuing education, work toward advanced degrees and patient interaction that will maintain and improve skills. Specific faculty responsibilities are assigned by the Director of the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs (RISP) and include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teaching in those areas to which the faculty member is most suited by education and experience
- Counseling of professional and pre-professional students
- Assisting the Director in the administration of the program through contributions during faculty meetings, service on program committees and the completion of assigned projects
- Contributing to the University through service on School and University committees
- Participating in sufficient continuing learning experiences and/or patient care interactions to remain competent in the field
- Representing Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs by providing accurate and appropriate communication to all constituents of the Programs, School and University
- Participating in Program and School level continuing education activities
- Submitting annual goals related to teaching and service
Program Director and Faculty Responsibilities
In addition, the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Director has the following program and faculty responsibilities, in consultation with the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Programs Director:
- Planning and directing the daily operations related to all didactic curriculum and clinical experience activities
- Overseeing ongoing program assessment, ensuring that the effectiveness of didactic and clinical education is maintained
- Managing the self-study accreditation process and maintains compliance by providing all pertinent information to JRCDMS and CAAHEP for dual accreditation in Abdominal Sonogaphy and Adult Cardiac Sonography
- Planning, creating, and implementing new admissions pathways for other health professionals
- Planning, creating, and implementing new Sonography Degree program, to include both medical ultrasound and echocardiography program tracks
- Participating in budget planning and resource development
- Assuming the leadership role in the continued program development
- Implementing the policies and procedures of the DMS Program
- Planning and developing changes to the policies and procedures of the DMS program
- Advising and collaborating with the RISP Director on programmatic changes and requirements for admission
- Serving as an academic advisor to prospective and current sonography students
- Reviewing and revising course materials for the IU Bulletin
- Reviewing and revising course information for the Health Professions Programs (HPP) website
- Reviewing and revising admission materials for the HPP website
- Verifying ultrasound courses are correctly listed for publication on the Registrar's Catalog
- Creating and distributing registration grids
- Documenting academic or behavioral issues and making recommendations to the RISP Program Director
- Advising students with academic or behavioral issues
- Attending recruitment events and creating recruitment material for the DMS program
- Attending monthly HPP meetings
- Teaching DMS courses
- Developing a syllabus and curriculum for DMS courses
- Serving as an advisor to the Clinical Coordinator, Lab Administrator, Lab Coordinator, and DMS faculty and laboratory teaching assistants
- Overseeing, monitoring, and communicating with the Clinical Coordinator to ensure the clinical effectiveness of all clinical affiliates is maintained
