Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery SMS - 3803
This is an academic leadership position based in Springfield (with Decatur outreach), serving as Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery within the Division of Neurosurgery. The role includes responsibility for developing and leading a comprehensive cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery program, while contributing to teaching, research, and an active clinical practice in Neurosurgery.

Administration: 10%
- Serve as Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery, providing leadership in the development, growth, and strategic direction of the cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery program
- Develop and manage programmatic goals, clinical pathways, and budgets related to cerebrovascular services
- Collaborate with hospital leadership and multidisciplinary teams (e.g., neurology, radiology, stroke services) to enhance comprehensive stroke and cerebrovascular care
- Contribute to the growth and development of additional adult neurosurgical programs, including general and spine.
- Assist in faculty recruitment for the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, and other appropriate areas of the Medical School
Teaching: 25%
- Assist the Chair in assuring a balanced and integrated educational program in the Neurosciences including undergraduate medical education, surgical residency programs, continued medical education, and multidisciplinary surgical program.
- Develop and expand educational programs in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery
- Assist in developing educational programs to meet relevant Neurosurgical needs in central and southern Illinois
- Assist in developing and implementing undergraduate curricula in Neurosurgery and the Neurosciences where appropriate
- Assist in educating residents in Neurosurgical patient care
- Serve as a mentor for Neurosurgical research for graduate and undergraduate Students
- Providing a role model in Neurosurgery as a teacher
Research: 15%
- Actively engage in research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Division, particularly in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery
- Develop programs of research and scholarly activities and keeping with the goals of the Division
- Produce published research that promotes the visibility and achievement of the Division
- Engage in clinical trials and/or basic science research that further the understanding and treatment of Neurosurgical disease
- Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support research
Service: 50%
- Practice Neurosurgery in an exemplary manner, properly balanced with other academic activities, and clinical, and administrative responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a clinical Neurosurgical practice appropriate to community needs
- Support development of a comprehensive stroke and cerebrovascular center
- Provide a role model in Neurosurgery as a practitioner for faculty, house staff and residents
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of accredited medical school program
- Successful completion of a Neurosurgical Residency
- Fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery with or without additional open Cerebrovascular training. Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in Neurosurgery
- Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Illinois or eligible for such licensure
- Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of clinical or academic leadership experience
- Demonstrated experience in program development or leadership in cerebrovascular neurosurgery
