Director of Faculty and Leadership Development in Faculty Affairs
Position Summary
The Director of Faculty and Leadership Development in Faculty Affairs supports the professional development of faculty and administrators while advancing institution-wide initiatives and policies. The position reports to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, who in turn reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. The role includes managing personnel and budgets within the Faculty and Leadership Development area. The Director is responsible for researching, designing, delivering, and assessing development programs for faculty and academic leaders. These programs aim to enhance excellence at the University of Georgia. Current focus areas include faculty success planning, mentoring, leadership development, productivity, and engagement.
The Director also evaluates program effectiveness and assesses development needs across the institution. Collaboration with faculty and administrators is a key component of the role. The position involves working with multiple campus units, such as the Graduate School and the Center for Teaching and Learning. Additionally, the Director serves as a primary faculty support resource and develops communications for various audiences through email, web, and social media channels.
This is a non-tenure track or tenured faculty position. Candidates with academic credentials and qualifications that merit a tenured faculty appointment will be considered for tenure, which would be held within the appropriate academic department independently of their service as director. Internal applicants will retain their current rank and tenure status. External applicants and current staff with a master’s degree who do not qualify for tenure on appointment will be appointed as a non-tenure track administrative faculty member.
Minimum Qualifications
- Terminal or master’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Candidates with a master’s degree and currently in a staff position are also encouraged to apply.
Additional Requirements
- Three or more years of experience in providing educational development to faculty and academic leaders
- A minimum of five years of experience in higher education
- Demonstrated ability to research, design, and lead workshops and cohort programs, utilizing active learning techniques.
- Strong capability in managing personnel and budgets
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and administrators.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
- Knowledge and experience with evidence-based approaches to learning and professional development, and a commitment to ongoing learning in these areas.
- Demonstrated ability in leading a variety of stakeholders in planning, establishing, and maintaining programs that add value to an institution.
- Knowledge in workshop facilitation and instructional design (in-person and virtual).
- Background in educational development in higher education, as found in offices of faculty affairs, centers for teaching and learning, human resources, or academic units.
- A strong interest in supporting the success of others through training, coaching, or mentoring, preferably with documented success and/or certification in these activities.
- Excellent organizational skills and project management experience — taking multiple projects from conception to fruition, prioritizing workload to meet deadlines and budgets
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience in writing and designing communications to internal and external audiences via websites, social media, and emails
Duties/Responsibilities
The UGA Office of Faculty Affairs supports the recruitment, promotion, and career development of faculty and academic leaders at UGA. It invites applications and nominations for the Director of Faculty and Leadership Development in Faculty Affairs. This position supports the professional development of individual faculty and administrators, as well as the implementation of institution-wide initiatives and administrative policies related to faculty. It reports to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, who reports directly to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost. It has responsibility for managing personnel and budgets for the Faculty and Leadership Development area of Faculty Affairs.
The Director of Faculty and Leadership Development will be responsible for researching, designing, managing, delivering, and assessing a range of programs for faculty and academic leaders that enhance excellence at the University of Georgia. Although there is opportunity to evolve additional programs, current topics include; 1) planning for success as a faculty member, 2) effective mentoring, 3) academic leadership development, 4) enhancing faculty productivity and impact, and 5) increasing faculty engagement and sense of community. The Director will be responsible for evaluation of program effectiveness and for periodically assessing faculty and leadership development needs institution wide.
The Director will collaborate with faculty and administrators on the delivery of new and existing programs and will have frequent opportunities to interact with colleagues in other UGA units, including the Graduate School, the Center for Teaching and Learning, University Human Resources, Office of Academic and Community Engagement, and the Office of Research. The Director will serve as one of the primary sources of faculty support within the Office of Faculty Affairs and thus must be adept at interacting with faculty and knowledgeable about the challenges that they face on a regular basis. The position will include writing and designing communications for internal and external audiences via emails, the website, and social media.
