Director of Technology, License & Marketing
Reporting to the AVP of Intellectual Property and Industrial Engagement and in support of the mission of the UH Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation (OTTI), this position is responsible for the marketing and licensing of UH's portfolio of intellectual property (IP) and overseeing the license portfolio and licensee compliance. Primarily responsible for identifying potential licensees and securing license agreements through marketing and outreach efforts. Through external stakeholder, market research and engagement of faculty inventors, develops and executes marketing plan for UH patents. Works with OTTI staff responsible for IP management and technology commercialization to capture value in UH IP. Directs the compliance to ensure efficient workflow and interactions with the UH research and technology enterprise.
- Engages with industry partners, startups, and investors to build relationships to understand their needs and develop commercialization strategies for a portfolio of technologies.
- Negotiates, drafts, and executes options and licenses with optimal deal structure with legal support including; leading negotiations, providing support to the lead negotiator, and providing guidance to faculty and staff through negotiations.
- Structures licensing terms based on valuation, the appropriate risk factors, and ensure pragmatic milestones are included to encourage licensees to commercialize the technology, ensures review of the agreement, collects signatures, and closes out the agreement.
- Directs the day-to-day operations of the licensing and compliance group within OTTI to ensure an efficient workflow and response with internal and external stakeholders.
- Supervises and mentors licensing staff, evaluate performance and provides formal and informal guidance; set departmental goals and objectives, including workforce planning and assess priorities as appropriate in order to achieve objectives.
- Collaborates with other OTTI Directors and mentors OTTI junior staff, evaluates performance and provides formal and informal guidance; assists the AVP in defining departmental goals and objectives, including workforce planning, and executes OTTI priorities as appropriate in order to achieve objectives.
- Balances the needs of a complex set of stakeholders including faculty, students, administration, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and investors.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
MQ: Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly- job related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Preferred: Additional education includes MBA in Marketing or JD degree (with passage of USPTO bar exam) are not required but would be a bonus. Experience: Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Preferred: Minimum of ten (10) years with at least 2-4 years specializing in technology licensing and marketing.
