Offer Description
The Institute of Art History (IAH), www.ipu.hr, is a public research institution based in Zagreb, Croatia. Founded in 1961, the Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in the history and theory of art, architecture and visual culture, with particular emphasis on Croatia's artistic heritage and its national, regional and European contexts.
The Governing Board of the Institute of Art History invites applications for the position of Director of the Institute of Art History.
Candidate profile
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- be a researcher employed in a scientific position at the level of Senior Research Associate (Croatian: viši znanstveni suradnik) or higher, in the humanities, in the field of art history; and
- be an art historian with published scholarly works and relevant experience in scientific research.
Pursuant to Article 39(2) of the Institutions Act, a person who, under the legislation governing companies, may not serve as a member of a company's management board may not be appointed Director.
The Director will be appointed by the Governing Board following a public selection procedure conducted in accordance with the Institutions Act, the Higher Education and Scientific Activity Act and the Statute of the Institute of Art History.
The appointment is for a four-year term. The appointed Director will enter into a full-time employment relationship with the Institute.
Job description
The Director is the head and legal representative of the Institute and is responsible for the lawful and efficient operation of the institution.
The Director's responsibilities include:
- organising and managing the work and operations of the Institute
- proposing the Institute's financial plan and managing its implementation
- managing the Institute's assets, subject to the approval of the Governing Board where required
- overseeing the implementation of the Institute's strategy and institutional objectives
- performing other duties prescribed by law, the Statute and the Institute's general acts
Application documents
Applications must include:
- a curriculum vitae, including a list of published scholarly works and information on scientific research and other relevant scholarly activities;
- a copy of the diploma confirming the award of a doctoral degree;
- evidence that the applicant is employed in a scientific position at the level of Senior Research Associate or higher in the humanities, in the field of art history, such as an employer's certificate, employment contract or other appropriate evidence;
- a certificate of no ongoing criminal proceedings, issued by a competent municipal court or obtained through the Croatian e-Citizens portal, which must be no more than 15 days old on the date of submission of the application;
- a hand-signed statement confirming that none of the impediments to appointment referred to in Article 39(2) of the Institutions Act, in conjunction with Article 239(2) of the Companies Act, apply; and
- a programme of work, management and development of the Institute for the four-year term of office.

The application deadline is 30 days from the publication of the call in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Croatia:
Friday, 9 October 2026, at 23:59 Central European Summer Time (CEST).
Applicants who are found to meet the formal requirements of the call will be invited to present their programme of work, management and development of the Institute orally before the Scientific Council and/or the Governing Board of the Institute.
