About the program
In this Doctor of Philosophy in Biology and Chemistry, you will deepen your knowledge on a chosen topic within the biology and chemistry field through independent, sustained and academically supervised research.
With the guidance and supervision of our internationally recognised research staff in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University, you will undertake research to develop an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in one or more discipline areas.
By generating a substantial contribution to knowledge in your chosen area – in the form of a thesis of up to 50,000 words – you will become an expert in your field and advance your career prospects.

To be considered for selection into a Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) degree, you are required to have completed either:
- a research project in a related area including a thesis which is equivalent to at least 25% of a year's full-time study at Level 8 or 9 of the Australian Qualifications Framework with achievement of a grade for the project equivalent to a Deakin grade of 70% or equivalent
- a higher degree by research (HDR) in a related area
