DTU Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Resilient, Health Promoting and Inclusive Indoor Environments and Occupant Well Being
DTU Sustain seeks a candidate with a strong research profile in Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), human well‑being, and health‑promoting indoor environments.
The position focuses on how buildings can support diverse populations, including vulnerable and sensitive groups, under increasing climate variability and extreme weather events. You will contribute to evidence‑based strategies that strengthen resilience, protect and improve health, and enhance the lived experience of occupants.
The Section for Indoor Environment conducts research to define criteria and develop methods ensuring healthy and comfortable indoor environment at the lowest possible environmental impact. Within this framework, the position emphasizes human‑centred and adaptive indoor environments, multisensory comfort, and the interaction between environmental conditions and physiological/psychological responses. You will contribute to resilient indoor‑environment innovations that combine sensory‑variable design concepts, personalised solutions, and psychological mechanisms of comfort and well‑being, supported by theoretical and empirical research.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your focus will be on advancing inclusive, health‑supporting, and resilient indoor‑environment solutions, involving both fundamental studies to increase our understanding and the development of practical building strategies. You will work with colleagues at DTU and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark and abroad.
Your responsibilities
- Design and execute controlled climate‑chamber studies integrating environmental. measurements, subjective evaluations, and physiological data.
- Conduct field campaigns in buildings, including multi-domain monitoring and user-based assessments.
- Investigate visual and non‑visual effects of light on occupants.
- Develop evidence-based criteria for health‑promoting and resilient indoor environments, including strategies for vulnerable groups.
- Develop and tailor personalised environmental control solutions that reduce energy use, enhance building resilience, and address individual needs.
- Publish research in leading journals, contribute to international conferences, and communicate results to industry, policymakers, and user communities.
- Develop innovative ideas for future research and participate actively in raising funds for research.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and participate in international research initiatives, including IEA Annex networks and broader collaborations in human‑centred building research.
Qualifications
- A PhD in indoor environment, building science, energy engineering, or a related field.
- Strong experience in the evaluation of IEQ through controlled environment experiments, field studies, and multi‑domain investigations.
- Documented experience working with diverse populations, including vulnerable groups, using rigorous subjective, behavioural, and physiological assessment methods.
- Expertise in human-centric and health‑promoting indoor environments, including sensory comfort, environmental variability, restorative potential, and salutogenic design principles.
- Experience with research on visual and non‑visual impacts of light on health and well‑being.
- An established international research network and collaborations across engineering, architecture, psychology, neuroscience, or related disciplines.
- Ability to work independently, manage complex research tasks, supervise students, and contribute proactively to collaborative environments.
- Publication record in high‑quality journals and demonstrated ability to disseminate research across academic, professional, and public platforms.
You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
