E4 Powerhouse Maintenance Repairperson II

- Maintain boilers, turbines, air compressors, cooling towers, fans, and related equipment through preventive maintenance such as fitting and adjusting bearings, packing or lubrication.
- Inspect all Power Plant equipment for defects or wear, and determine whether repair, replacement or maintenance is necessary for proper operation.
- Balance, set and align Power Plant equipment and check tightness, alignments and settings to prevent defects or wear using laser alignment and vibration monitoring tools.
- Repair, maintain or replace electrical motors, pumps, heat exchangers, valves and all other components of turbines, boilers, cooling towers, fans and other associated Power Plant equipment.
- Dismantle and repair boiler, turbine, air compressor or other equipment using cranes, cables, slings, rope-falls, riggings, scaffolding, booms, block and tackle and any other apparatus for moving heavy objects.
- Enter data into a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- May coordinate the work of Powerhouse Maintenance Repairperson Designees or other assigned assistants.
- Work independently or in a team of other Maintenance Repairpersons and/or other Skilled Trades Repairpersons to trouble-shoot and repair equipment.
- Perform other assigned job functions as designated by Supervisor.
Related Duties:
- Inspect, install and repair valves, pumps and safety devices.
- Inspect and adjust automatic or manual control mechanisms on boilers, turbines, air compressors, cooling towers and other associated equipment.
- Clean, inspect and perform routine maintenance on equipment and building facilities including, but not limited to, cleaning, oiling, greasing, repair of furnace refractory, inlet air louvers, and repacking of leaking packing glands.
- Observe fire and safety precautions.
- Report unusual or emergency situations to appropriate Operating Engineer and supervisor.
- Work with other crafts, outside contractors, engineers, and other resources as needed.
- Work independently or in a team of other Maintenance Repairpersons to trouble-shoot and repair equipment.
- Perform other assigned job functions as designated by a supervisor.
- Graduation from high school, GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 4 year mechanical apprenticeship or two year associate degree from an accredited mechanical trades school plus minimum of four years of associated mechanical work experience (i.e. Military Training, Technical Training, Mechanical Service Technician including 8000 hours of documented mechanical experience from previous job or employers).
- Considerable experience in rotating equipment or power plant equipment maintenance.
- Ability to tolerate high levels of heat and noise.
- Considerable mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to interpret relevant blue prints, diagrams, sketches and specifications.
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Google Suite.
- Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Considerable knowledge of Safety Standards and Procedures.
- Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with co-workers, staff, and members of management.
- Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise. This position constantly maneuvers to service and repair powerhouse equipment traversing under and over obstacles, ascends/descends ladders to service and repair powerhouse equipment, and routinely moves powerhouse equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the International Union of Operating Engineers, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
