Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Job Description Summary:

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, Or Initiative, the Education Outreach and Research Manager will play a leading role in supporting Or Initiative’s educator engagement, curriculum development, and qualitative research across the Los Angeles and Orange County region. This position encompasses a broad range of responsibilities that will vary over time. These include developing and independently executing a strategy for building and sustaining relationships with partner schools, planning and leading student researchers and Or Initiative staff in in-school interviewing, as well as managing interview logistics and transcription workflows. The Coordinator will also have a lead role in collaborative data analysis and resultant writing of academic journal articles and public reports.
The Coordinator will also be part of the leadership team for the design and facilitation of professional learning experiences for middle and high school educators.The ideal candidate will have advanced training in education, communication, or a related field, along with demonstrated experience in qualitative research methods, educator engagement, and curriculum and/or educator professional development. This role demands a high degree of autonomy, organizational rigor, and the ability to collaborate effectively in university and K-12 school environments.
This is a part-time, hourly position (20-29 hours per week). This is a grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal beyond the initial 12-month term. This position requires regular travel to multiple worksites. The employee must have reliable transportation (a personal vehicle) and the ability to travel independently as needed to perform job duties. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.Candidates must be based in Los Angeles or Orange County and available for in-person meetings and school visits.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will vary week-to-week over the course of employment, but will include the following:

Outreach & Relationship Building

  • Develop and independently execute a strategy for identifying, cultivating, and sustaining relationships with partner schools and educators across Los Angeles and Orange County, including virtual contact and on-site visits
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for partner schools, maintaining regular communication and ensuring strong, ongoing engagement
  • Coordinate with school and district stakeholders to align research activities, scheduling, and program participation
  • Represent the initiative in meetings with educators, school leaders, and community partners

In-School Research

  • Lead the design and execution of formative research activities in selected school sites, including IRB compliance, research design and interview guide development, and research team management for interview and/or focus groups with educators, school leaders, and students.
  • Interview Scheduling & Logistics: Coordinate outreach to schools and schedule interviews; send and track consent and demographic forms; manage the calendar of confirmed interviews, including times, interviewers, and locations; communicate with students, parents, and staff to confirm logistics; prepare materials for interview team; coordinate participant gift card purchases.
  • Audio Transcription Management: Upload audio files for transcription; review transcripts for accuracy and completeness; finalize and organize transcripts; upload transcripts into Dedoose and link with demographic data
  • Collaborative Data Analysis in Dedoose: Develop an initial codebook aligned with research questions and emerging themes; calibrate coding approach with doctoral students and Dr. Katz; participate in regular check-ins to refine the codebook and ensure coding consistency; code transcripts and identify key themes, representative quotes, and participant group patterns.

Writing for academic audiences, research reports, and public-facing outlets

  • Mentor undergraduate and doctoral students in research design, qualitative analysis, and lead the writing and refining manuscripts for submission to conferences and peer-reviewed journals
  • Provide feedback on data analysis approaches and interpretation on co-authored manuscripts
  • Contribute to written reports for publication, funder reporting, and grant proposals

Curriculum and Professional Development Design

  • Contribute to Or Initiative’s curricular resource design and development for middle school, high school, and college-level educators and students, based on research findings.
  • Plan and facilitate educator professional learning, both in person and virtually, for middle and high school teachers
  • Collect and analyze feedback on curricular resources in Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings and classrooms for publication

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years in forming educational partnerships with schools, districts and/or non-profit and university-based organizations
  • Demonstrable experience conducting qualitative research (interviews, focus groups) and supporting data coding.
  • Established relationships or demonstrated ability to build partnerships in LA and/or Orange County schools
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment
  • Experience with qualitative research
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Strong academic writing capabilities and editorial abilities

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s in education, communication or an allied field (e.g., media studies, human development, public policy)
  • At least 3 years of experience with in-school research, educator outreach, and professional development training at the K-12 level. K-12 teaching experience in addition is preferred.
  • Experience with qualitative analysis software (e.g., Dedoose, NVivo)
