Effects of bio-inspired remediation techniques of contaminated soils on soil strength and erosion control.

The PhD topic will focus on the use bio-inspired remediation techniques that are being used to remove contaminants, such as heavy metals from the soil in conjunction with their potential effect upon the engineering properties of the soil, such as increase of soil strength and further prevention of erosion. The project aims to investigate the mechanisms of bio-inspired remediation, identify advantages and potential limitations to help engineers make informed decisions and quantify any improvement of the soil properties in terms of shear strength, to use in geotechnical design.
