Primary Function of Organizational Unit North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
New Hanover County is located in southeastern North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second smallest county in the state but is home to over 238,000 people. Projections predict its population to increase to almost 300,000 by 2040.
The City of Wilmington is the county seat and is rich in historical significance and home to many recreational and cultural sites and events. Important contributors to the local economy include the state port, tourism, filmmaking, manufacturing, and financial technology.

Overview This position supports New Hanover County Cooperative Extension programs, specifically focusing on the delivery, administration, and coordination of positive youth development programs through 4-H and community health education through Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- School Enrichment Coordination: Lead the coordination and delivery of 4-H school enrichment programs in local schools, with a primary focus on managing the 4-H Embryology program (including teacher training, classroom presentations, and logistics).
- 4-H Club and Program Support: Assisting the 4-H Agent, providing administrative and programming support to 4-H community clubs, including volunteer management, enrollment tracking, curriculum distribution, and assisting with 4-H Teen Leaders and county, district and state level presentation events.
- Summer Camp Support: Assist with the planning, registration, marketing, and delivery of 4-H summer camps and workshops hosted at the Arboretum or off-site locations.
- Healthy Living Programming: Collaborate with the FCS Agent to deliver educational programs focused on youth healthy living, physical activity, and nutrition.
- FCS Program Support: Provide programming support for the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program, assisting with workshop registration, food safety or nutrition class preparation, community health outreach, and resource distribution.
- Database & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of youth enrollment, volunteer hours, and program participation; enter monthly demographic and program impact data into the Extension Reporting System (ERS).
- Communication & Marketing: Draft regular newsletter updates, social media posts, and marketing materials to promote 4-H clubs, summer camps, and upcoming FCS classes to families and schools.
- Customer Service: Provide professional, welcoming customer service by handling inquiries from parents, educators, and the public regarding youth enrollment, program schedules, and class registrations.
- Compliance & Professionalism: Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling youth medical forms, volunteer background checks, and program participant records, strictly following North Carolina Cooperative Extension and university policies.
Preferred Qualities / Skills
- Engaging, energetic interpersonal skills; enjoys working closely with youth, educators, parents, and community volunteers.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented; comfortable tracking multiple program schedules, classroom kits, and seasonal registration deadlines.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; confident delivering educational presentations to diverse groups of school-aged youth and adults.
- Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace (Google Drive, Docs, Sheets), and basic graphic design tools (such as Canva); comfortable learning specialized database systems (like 4-H Online).
- General knowledge of positive youth development, experiential education, or nutrition and consumer sciences.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends for special 4-H events, volunteer training sessions, or county fairs.

Minimum Experience/Education: The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:
- Experience working in a classroom, camp, or informal educational setting (e.g., museums, nature centers, or scouts).
- Experience in animal science or teaching biological concepts (such as life cycles/embryology).
- Familiarity with Cooperative Extension, 4-H, or Family and Consumer Sciences programming.
