Faculty - Communications
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Prepare and teach courses as assigned by the Division Assistant/Associate Dean.
- On the first day of each course, review and post, via the Learning Management System (LMS), a syllabus that provides, at minimum, the following information: a. Expected outcomes and performance objectives. b. Grading policy. c. Attendance policy - make-up work/tests. d. Schedule of assignments. e. Login information for students to access the Colleges LMS.
- Provide the Division Assistant/Associate Dean with copies of materials listed in Item 2 above.
- Maintain office hours in accordance with the Faculty Bargaining Agreement.
- Participate in student advising and registration.
- Assist students in formulating educational and career plans.
- Assist students with academic or course problems.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
- Maintain accurate and complete course records and comply with all specified reporting dates.
- Serve on college committees and participate in college governance.
- To promote retention, contact students who do not attend class or attend class sporadically.
- Participate each semester in the evaluation and documentation of the instructional process and work to continually improve student learning outcomes.
- Complete program reviews in accordance with the division schedule.
- Employ a variety of teaching techniques and strategies to address the diverse learning needs of students.
- Attend instructional division, Academic Affairs area and institution-wide meetings.
- Assist in developing budget for division, if applicable.
- Engage in professional development, advisory boards and other external agencies to stay current in the field and ensure updated curriculum.
- Notify the Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost of special projects, activities, etc. that may be used in publicizing the class, division, or College.
- Support the Colleges recruitment and retention efforts by upholding the institutional image on and off campus.
- Stimulate interest in student activities by encouraging student participation.
- Participate in graduation exercises as required.
- Ensure all course assignments and course evaluations are linked to the LMS gradebook.
- In order to teach online or hybrid classes, faculty must attend training as offered.
- Work collaboratively with Assistant/Associate Dean and Division faculty on initiatives to improve student success rates in division courses.
- Develop and update curriculum.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS. Qualified applicants will:
- Hold a Masters degree in Communications, English or closely related degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Have 3 years teaching experience in speech or writing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. Preferred applicants will have:
- Community college teaching experience.
- Experience utilizing social media and technology in class instruction in communications.
- A thorough understanding of and complete commitment to the community college mission of access to success for all student learners.
- Experience, ability and enthusiasm to support student learners in general education classes.
- Experience, ability and enthusiasm to support communications program students as they progress toward their educational goals.
- Ability and willingness to modify personal teaching style based on feedback and current research in effective teaching strategies.
- Ability to lead and willingness to support program improvement through collaborative assessment of student learning and curriculum development.
- Experience leveraging technology to support student learning.
- Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse populations.
