Fibre Laser Systems Engineer for Optical Atomic Clocks

  • Based in the College of Science at the City East Campus
  • Full-time, fixed-term position available until March 2028
  • Salary range: $114,917 - $135,932 per annum (plus 17% superannuation)

This role will contribute to the design, construction and evaluation of self-contained fibre laser systems, for optical atomic clocks and other precision metrology applications. This work will be conducted in the contexts of industry and defence collaborations, contributing towards building Australia’s sovereign capabilities in developing cutting-edge, fibre laser systems.

The team

Reporting to the Chief Investigator and Research Group Senior Manager of Adelaide University’s Precision Measurement Group (PMG), the role will lead the development of experimental capabilities in the research and construction of next-generation optical atomic clocks. PMG is composed of world-leading physicist and engineers, developing next-generation precision metrology techniques and technologies, towards commercialisation and real-world deployment.

Experience

To join our community and thrive in this role, you will likely have the following skills and experience:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in experimental physics, electrical and electronic engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in research and development of single frequency lasers, including: frequency stability and low noise performance, tuning, power scaling strategies, and piezo-integrated locking systems.
  • Strong background in fibre-based laser architectures with experience in mode selection and polarisation control. Practical understanding of optical fibre mode behaviour and hands-on experience working with fibre Bragg gratings.
  • Hands-on experience in laser characterisation techniques including noise measurements. Experience integrating fibre lasers with stabilisation and control systems, such as frequency locking to reference cavities, atomic references, or fibre interferometers.
