You will use advanced computer simulations to investigate and optimise novel X-ray generation techniques, comparing their performance and stability to guide the design of next-generation sources. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with, and potentially test your work at, leading UK research facilities including CLARA/FEBE at Daresbury Laboratory and EPAC at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Training and Development
As part of this PhD, you will:

About the Research Environment
The Accelerator Physics Group at the University of Manchester is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in laser–plasma acceleration, advanced radiation sources, and beam dynamics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the UK’s largest and most active physics departments, providing an outstanding environment for postgraduate research.
As a member of the Cockcroft Institute, you will join a national collaboration that brings together researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster, and Strathclyde, as well as STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) at Daresbury Laboratory.
Eligibility and Entry Requirements
Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a first-class or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Experience or interest in computational physics, plasma physics, or accelerator science would be an advantage but is not essential.
Funding Notes
This studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years, covering UK rate tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate.
