Full Professor of Historical Ancillary Sciences (including Digital Methods) with a Focus on the Middle Ages

The position:

This professorship will contribute to strengthening and advancing the Auxiliary Historical Sciences (with a focus on the Middle Ages) at the university. Successful candidates must have a strong research profile, one that demonstrates their ability to apply the methods of the Auxiliary Historical Sciences - especially in the fields of documentary source studies as well as archival, library and manuscript cultures of the European Middle Ages. They must also demonstrate experience in applying methods in the Digital and Computational Humanities. Applications are especially welcome from scholars who have experience in integrating the auxiliary sciences with new research questions and perspectives, especially cultural and material history approaches, and a record of innovation in this area. Active participation in relevant interdisciplinary research clusters at the university is a key part of the job profile. The ability and willingness to teach the full chronological range in the fields "Auxiliary Sciences of History/ Medieval History" are of particular importance, not only at the Bachelor’s, teaching degree, diploma, Master’s, and doctoral levels, but also especially within the Master’s program "Auxiliary Sciences of History and Archival Studies“.

  • Experience in designing and managing large research projects
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level
  • Willingness to take on organisational and administrative responsibilities within the Faculty/Center and/or the University

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees.
