JOB DESCRIPTION

A full-time academic position, indivisible position, in the field of “Small animal surgery” within the Department of Companion animal Teaching and Clinics (DCC). This position includes teaching and research activities as well as services to the community.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will participate in theoretical teaching in small animal surgery (approx. 30 teaching hours), jointly with other members of the department, within the following teaching units (subject to departmental discretion regarding course allocation):

  • VETE2082 – Orthopaedics (small animals)
  • VETE2068 – Medicine, Dentistry and General Surgery of Companion Animals and Equids
  • VETE2081 – Companion Animal Medicine II

The candidate will also participate in clinical teaching of small animal surgery for Master’s students in Veterinary Medicine:

  • VETE2086 – Companion Animal Clinic
  • VETE2093 – Companion Animal Clinical Module

In addition, the candidate will contribute to the teaching of surgery for rotating interns, specialized interns, and residents enrolled in an EBVS-recognised residency programme.

In addition, the candidate will annually supervise final dissertations (master degree) :

  • VTFE0005-1 : Final dissertation (8 weeks) [supervision of final dissertations].

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • The candidate will develop a strong and original research activity with international recognition in one of the domains of small animal surgery. This activity will represent 50% (0.5 FTE) of the position and will involve the development of a research team and the supervision of PhD theses.
  • The development of collaborations within the Department and Faculty, as well as at national and international levels, is expected.

SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

  • The candidate will contribute to the national and international reputation of the DCC through involvement in the decision-making and/or operational bodies of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) or other international veterinary organisations.
  • He/she will provide continuing education to general practitioners, which supports the DCC’s visibility and attracts patients needed for teaching and clinical research.
  • He/she will participate in community service at both Faculty and University levels.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED / PROFILE

Required qualifications

  • Be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine ;
  • Be a Diplomate of the ECVS or ACVS (Small Animals);
  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD);
  • Be able to communicate effectively in French.

The candidate must demonstrate

  • Proven research record in small animal surgery, demonstrated by sustained international-level publications; criteria include bibliometric indices (weighted according to seniority and specialty), established networks/partnerships, previous involvement in research projects and teams, and the ability to develop and articulate a scientific vision for the next five years.
  • Teaching excellence and communication skills, evidenced through prior experience (where applicable), a public lecture, and a teaching project.
  • Strong strategic vision for developing the discipline both within the department and internationally.
  • Involvement at national and international levels in the field of small animal surgery (notably within the ECVS).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork ability, networking and collaboration skills.
  • Sense of collective interest.

Assets

  • Experience in small animal orthopaedic surgery (research, clinical practice, theoretical teaching);
  • Have completed a mobility stay of more than six months outside the Wallonia-Brussels Federation;
  • Proficiency in English.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

  1. Each candidate’s file is reviewed by a faculty committee, which selects the applicants to be interviewed, providing justification for its decisions based on the call for applications and the candidates’ qualifications and achievements. The committee then conducts the interviews. The interview focuses in particular on the candidate’s curriculum vitae, teaching and research plans, and integration within the institution. The selection process includes a public lecture.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is awarded either for a fixed term of four years, or, in certain exceptional circumstances, immediately on a permanent basis.

If a fixed term contract is awarded, an evaluation will be carried out at the end of the third year.

  • If the evaluation is negative, the person’s appointment will end after the fourth year.
  • If the evaluation is positive, the person will be appointed permanently.

REMUNERATION

Basic appointments are made at the grade of lecturer.

The gross monthly salary at the start of the scale (on a full-time basis) is currently €5,992.58, to which is added an end of year allowance (in December) and a holiday allowance (in June).

In exception circumstances, the Faculty may submit a substantiated application to obtain a higher grade in the salary scale (length-of-service bonus).

The career of full-time teaching staff includes the grades of lecturer, professor, and full professor. Career development (after the recruitment grade) is possible through the promotions’ procedure, the terms and conditions of which are defined by the Board of Directors.
