The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) is located in the city of Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, near the border with Turkey. The University was founded in 2014, and as stated in its Mission: AUK is dedicated to preparing future generations of leaders through curricular and co-curricular excellence in an American-style education focusing on transformative knowledge, innovative research, ethical community service, respect for inclusion and diversity, global connectedness, and life-long learning, all aiming to ensure economic, environmental, social, and political advancement- regionally, nationally, and globally.
For the past years, AUK has been focused on developing its infrastructure and building the capacity of its employees as it proceeds through the accreditation process with the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). AUK was granted Candidate for Accreditation status in September 2024. AUK's progress is also evident in a doubling of enrollment since 2021, the introduction of its first master's program (M.Sc. in AI) in fall 2025, and delivery of its community education programming across Kurdistan.
We seek to appoint a motivated and suitably qualified academic/practitioner with expertise in the field of Architecture. The successful applicant will join a vibrant team and help shape the development of our educational and professional course provision in this exciting area. The following are the main responsibilities:
- Lecture undergraduate courses in the Architecture
- Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course’s standard course outline as a guide.
- Create, post, and articulate course syllabus, learning outcomes, or objectives to ensure student understanding of course learning objectives and expectations.
- Create course curriculum, handouts, lectures, workshops, presentations, and other course materials required to deliver course information understandably and interestingly to ensure students are engaged with the course material to achieve the course learning outcomes.
- Participate in program-level learning assessment. Participation includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
- Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in internship, observation, field experience, and similar settings as appropriate for the course or program.
- Responsible for delivering in a student-receptive manner the knowledge, skills, and experiences each student needs to successfully achieve course learning outcomes as outlined in the course syllabus.
- Create course rubrics to assess each student’s performance related to the course’s learning objective and identify areas for student improvement.
- Be available to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be communicated to supervisors and students through the course syllabus each semester.
- Assign grades, maintain course/student records following educational rights and privacy requirements (FERPA regulations), and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
- Serve on standing and ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, faculty senate, or as a student organization advisor.
- Take on caretaker administrative duties if the Provost requires and mentor or assist in formally or informally orienting new faculty.
- Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the discipline and departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings.
- Develop strong relationships with the community, professionals, foundations, and companies supporting institutional growth.
- Collaborate with the faculty on several interdisciplinary research projects, secure research funding, and teach undergraduate (and later graduate) courses.
- Perform other appropriate and reasonable required duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering or a closely related field from a reputable university.
- Have experience in academic, practitioner, and consultant duties linked to Architectural Engineering.
- Demonstrate ability to teach Architectural Design Studios or more areas in Architectural Engineering.
- Be proficient in Architecture -related software.
- Demonstrate record or potential for research such as; Sustainable Materials and Execution, Building Mechanical Systems, especially principles, and design of HVAC and Electrical systems and publication in scholarly journals within the discipline.
- Strong communication skills are required to transfer the knowledge to the student body.
