Job Description:
The Garage Assistant provides vehicle safety, and mechanical inspection services supporting the College’s students and employees. Reports to Manager, Transportation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of bus/automobile mechanical systems, including but not limited to tires, gas, oil, battery, air conditioner, heat, and windshield wipers.
- Performs bus maintenance before and after all trips, including but not limited to cleaning aisles, seats, bathrooms, windows, and the exterior and interior of buses.
- Knowledge of all trip routes before departure.
- Knowledge of basic automobile repair
- Reports mechanical problems to the Transportation Manager.
- Follows all Florida and U.S. Department of Transportation rules and regulations.
- Makes independent decisions to safeguard riders and Pensacola State College property.
- Assist Transportation Manager with repairs to vehicles.
- Responsible for knowing and conforming to all safety practices and regulations in this specific area and position. Unsafe conditions should be reported to the immediate supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence.
- Ability to write reports (transportation delays, accidents, gas mileage, bus malfunctions, needed repairs, etc.).
- Must be able to comply with traffic regulations to operate vehicles safely and courteously.
- Ability to check the condition of a vehicle’s tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order.
- Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures.
- Regular and consistent attendance, as well as punctuality, are essential to fulfilling the requirements of this job.
- Required work time may involve some evenings and variations in work hours for registration and special related events.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED equivalency. Knowledge of the basic elements of bus mechanics. Must possess a valid Florida driver license, and have established a safe driving record. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.
Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of § 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation when submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.
Annual Salary: $37,750.00 (19.36/hour)
