Genetic Counselor - Cardiology

Position Summary

In this exciting and dynamic role, the cardiovascular genetic counselor will work with a dedicated team of physicians and researchers.  The successful candidate will play a key role in the continued development and implementation of the CUIMC/ NYP adult clinical cardiovascular genetic program and related research projects. Genetic counseling will be provided to both inpatients and outpatients across an academic clinical cardiovascular setting that includes patients with familial cardiovascular diseases (arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, dyslipidemia, aortic disease etc.).  Dedicated to the division of cardiology, the position will also have a role in future gene therapy clinical trials and research within the cardiogenetics clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate clinical activities across three cardiogenetics clinics (cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia and dyslipidemia)
  • Within the context of patient encounters, the GC will provide pre- and post-genetic counseling, order and coordinate genetic testing, disclose genetic testing results, write consult letters and assist with cascade screening
  • Work with multiple stakeholder groups such as referring providers, genetic testing laboratories, and insurance companies
  • Work across the Division of Cardiology, as well as, collaborate with genetics professionals and referring providers across the institution
  • Assist in coordinating genetic research studies, obtaining and maintaining Columbia institutional review board (IRB) approval
  • Assist in recruiting study patients, explaining studies to prospective participants and assisting with obtaining informed consent
  • Participate in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant preparations with the opportunity to co-author journal publications and to present results at national meetings
  • Provide education in genetics to medical students, genetic counseling students, residents, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred and will be accepted in lieu of related experience.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Genetic Counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous clinical experience in cardiovascular genetics strongly preferred.
  • At least two years of clinical experience and one year of research experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of exome variant annotation, database software and basic statistical analysis preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on moderately complex clinical and research tasks.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Participation in Medical Surveillance Program:
    • Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
    • Work with known infectious agents or biological toxins where prophylactic vaccination is available
    • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
  • Must successfully complete applicable compliance and systems training requirements.

  • Salary Range: $95,000 Annual - $107,900.00 Annual
