FAQ about the Assistant Professor Call
What does “Assistant Professor” mean in the Swedish system?
In Swedish, the position is referred to as biträdande universitetslektor. It is in many respects comparable to the US position of Assistant Professor and can also be translated as Associate Senior Lecturer.
The position is a fixed-term academic appointment designed to support the transition to research independence. It includes independent research, teaching, and collaboration, with clearly defined criteria for potential promotion to a permanent Senior Lecturer position.
In the employment contract, the position will be referred to as Associate Senior Lecturer.
Are these tenure-track positions?
These positions are not tenure-track in the US sense, but they do include a formal and well-established process for promotion. As an Assistant Professor, you may apply for promotion to a permanent position as Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer. You will undergo an evaluation to determine whether you meet the faculty's requirements for appointment.

How long is the appointment?
The positions are full-time, fixed-term appointments of five years.
Will I be expected to build my own research profile?
Yes. You are expected to develop an independent research program and actively build collaborations. The University offers a strong research environment, but establishing networks and partnerships is part of the role.
Are Swedish language skills required?
