Job Description

The Role

The Department of History and Welsh History invites applications for a Lectureship in American History. The appointment arises from the award of an AHRC Fellowship to Dr Miguel Hernández. Applications are particularly welcome from specialists in any aspect of the history of race relations in the modern United States of America.

What you’ll do

This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.

The post is a fixed-term appointment as Lecturer in American History (with particular emphasis upon history of race relations in the modern United States of America) in the Department of History and Welsh History. The post-holder will contribute to teaching at undergraduate level, as well as to student recruitment and administration.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be asked to deliver the following modules:

HY28320 African American History, 1808 to the Present (Part 2), years 2 and 3, UG 

HQ39620 The Invisible Empires: The First Ku Klux Klan and American Society, 1865-1915 (Part 2), year 3, UG

In addition, the role will also include the following:

  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required

Essential

  1. Appropriate academic training and accomplishment, as evidenced by a PhD (awarded or at point of submission) in an aspect of modern American history.
  2. Experience of teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate classes in the relevant subject area.
  3. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a capacity to contribute to the full range of the department’s undergraduate teaching (including core modules) and supervision.
  4. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a capacity to be fully and actively engaged in all aspects of the department’s work.
  5. Effective oral communication and presentation skills.
  6. An ability to carry out day-to-day administrative tasks conscientiously, efficiently and in a timely manner
  7. An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
  8. Strong inter-personal skills including the capacity to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

  1. Experience teaching modules on the history of American race relations AND/OR oral history theory and methodology.
  2. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Leve B2*
