We have 3-graduate level degree options in the Department of Kinesiology. Students earning one of these 3 degrees are eligible to apply for a GA position in the department.
MS in Athletic Training: Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
MS in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport and Human Performance: The Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport and Human Performance is designed to advance students’ understanding of relationships among movement, exercise and skills that occur in the contexts of development, learning, rehabilitation, and training.
MS in Sport Management: The mission of the graduate Sport Management emphasis in Kinesiology at Sam Houston State University is to effectively prepare students for a variety of executive positions within athletic and sports organizations.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Graduate Research Assistantship Details: You must be able to work in Huntsville, TX on SHSU’s main campus. The schedule is up to 20 hours per week often during regular work hours of Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM. Students must be accepted to the program in a graduate degree seeking program (MS in Athletic Training, Kinesiology: Sport and Human Performance, or Sport Management). Opportunities as (1) a faculty research assistant, and/or (2) a teaching assistant, or (3) combo position research and teaching.
General Skills and Qualifications: Self-motivation and a high level of responsibility. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Maintain good academic standing. Strong computer skills especially with Microsoft Office.
(1) Faculty Research Graduate Assistantship Responsibilities: Coordination of laboratory daily schedule, organization and maintenance of laboratory materials, assisting in the collection and analysis of data, recruitment of subjects, perform literature searches and reviews.
(2) Teaching Graduate Assistant Responsibilities: Activity Courses such as Basketball/Soccer, Softball/Volleyball, Weight Training, Bowling, Racquet Sports, Dance, etc. Instruction of KINE 3173: Exercise Physiology Lab.
(3) Combination of Teaching/Research Graduate Assistant Responsibilities: Instruction of KINE 3173: Exercise Physiology Lab, coordination of laboratory daily schedule, assisting in data collection and analysis.
Other Requirements: Graduate Assistantship Application Priority Deadlines: Spring Semester Start – Application review begins on Oct 1. Prior to applying, must be accepted into a graduate program at SHSU.
