Grocyn Lecturer

The Faculty of Classics seeks to appoint a Grocyn Lecturer to lead its Greek and Latin language teaching provision at the University of Oxford. Established in 1996 through the generous support of alumni and benefactors, the Grocyn Lectureship was created to oversee Classical language tuition within the Faculty. The postholder will play a central role in the planning, delivery, and coordination of Ancient Greek and Latin language teaching for undergraduate and graduate students across a range of levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

This full-time, permanent post is based at the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, Oxford. The successful candidate will contribute to Greek and Latin language teaching across the Faculty, including assessment, curriculum development, and outreach activities, while also line managing the Senior Lecturer in Greek and Latin and overseeing the coordination of language instruction within the Faculty. Candidates will possess outstanding competence in Ancient Greek and Latin, substantial experience in language teaching and academic coordination, and the ability to support students and teaching staff within a collaborative academic environment. Experience of line management, team leadership, and digital teaching resources would be an advantage.

About the role

Reporting to the Faculty Board Chair, the postholder will lead the delivery, coordination, and ongoing development of Greek and Latin language teaching across the Faculty. The successful candidate will undertake approximately 271 hours of Faculty teaching annually, teaching undergraduate and graduate students at all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

The role includes preparing and delivering lessons, developing teaching materials and online learning resources, identifying learning objectives, and supporting students in their academic progress and language development. The postholder will also contribute to the setting and marking of formative and summative assessments, examinations, admissions testing, and related academic administration.

The successful candidate will coordinate and organise Greek and Latin language instruction within the Faculty, including line managing the Senior Lecturer in Greek and Latin, supporting graduate instructors, participating in training activities, conducting mentoring visits, and contributing to curriculum development and teaching-related administration.

In addition, the postholder will contribute to outreach and widening participation activities, including Open Days, intensive language courses, bridging programmes, and UNIQ activities.
