ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a rare and high-profile leadership opportunity for an eminent academic to shape the future of one of Australia’s leading physics schools.
As Head of School, you will provide strategic, academic and operational leadership, driving excellence across research, teaching and engagement. Reporting to the Dean of Science, you will play a key role in advancing the University’s Strategy 2030 while fostering a high-performing, inclusive and collaborative culture.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the development and delivery of an internationally competitive research and education program
- Driving strategic direction, financial performance and operational excellence of the School
- Building and strengthening partnerships with industry, government and the broader research community
- Championing innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and global engagement
- Leading and developing academic and professional staff, fostering a culture of excellence and inclusion
- Ensuring strong governance, compliance and alignment with Faculty and University priorities
This position is based at the Parkville campus in Melbourne and is offered as a five-year Head of School appointment, alongside an ongoing professorial role.
ABOUT YOU
You are an internationally recognised academic leader with a strong track record of research excellence and a passion for shaping the future of physics and higher education.
- A PhD in Physics or a closely related discipline, with international standing in your field
- Demonstrated academic leadership experience within a complex organisation
- Proven ability to develop and execute strategic vision and drive organisational performance
- Strong track record in research excellence, including competitive funding and supervision of researchers
- Experience leading and managing high-performing, diverse teams
- Financial, operational and infrastructure management capability
- Commitment to collaboration across disciplines and with external partners
- Deep understanding of the higher education sector and its evolving landscape
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to represent the School and University externally
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse and safe working environment
