Chief Objective of Position
To support the successful development of student athletes both in the classroom and on the field.
Work Tasks
- Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes at Christopher Newport University.
- Directs and provides the planning, organizing and coaching for the Christopher Newport University women’s golf team.
- Encourages, fosters and directly supports student-athlete academic success in the classroom.
- Design strategies and analyze performance of the women’s golf teams and adjust strategies as needed. Establishes schedules that will promote success at the national level.
- Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters; consults with University administration for resolution of problems as required.
- Oversees all financial aspects of the women’s golf program including budget development and management.
- Assists the Assistant Director of Athletics for Administration and the Director of Golf with the daily operations of the CNU Golf Center.
- Utilizes independent judgment and renders decisions on a daily basis regarding the women’s golf team with little or no supervision on matters of importance.
- Occasionally provides support for the men’s golf team as agreed upon by the Assistant Director of Athletics for Administration and the Director of Golf.
- Develops and implements operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise.
- Screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective women’s golf recruits; coordinates with University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arranges meetings between prospects and the University. Coordinates campus tours for visiting prospective players. Assists with new student orientation activities.
- Compiles and analyses statistics for Christopher Newport University women’s golf team performance.
- Plans and administers the off season physical training program; provide special training for individual women’s golf team members as required.
- Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in strategy and equipment to support the women’s golf team. Authorizes purchases of related equipment for the women’s golf team.
- Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure NCAA compliance.
- Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. Participates in professional associations.
- Performs public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; performs community relation activities.
- Coordinate coach’s clinic; supervises dress code, any support staff and all team members.
- Works a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position.
- Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Provide the highest level of customer service with a 95% satisfaction rating with constituencies served.
- Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position. Report unsafe work conditions to your supervisor. Immediately report work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations.
- Skill in training or instructing student-athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Required Education
Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Experience Required
- Significant and successful demonstrated experience coaching golf.
- Experience using computers.
- Experience with National Collegiate Athletics Association and Conference rules and regulations.
- Experience training or instructing student athletes.
- Leadership experience in team management to include assistant coaches and others.
Additional Consideration - Experience
- Significant and successful demonstrated head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Experience coaching athletes at the collegiate level.
- Proven experience in recruiting successful student athletes consistent with NCAA guidelines.
- Experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations.
- Experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support.
