General Summary
The Softball Coach works under the supervision of the Athletic Director and is responsible for all programming and operations associated with the Central Community College Women's Softball Program. S/he will recruit student-athletes, direct practices, manage travel and practice schedules and supervise team conduct. In addition, s/he provides instruction for select courses within the area of Physical Education or related discipline in which individual is credentialed. Instructional assignments will be no more than 20% of position responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Recruiting - Lead the recruiting process for the Softball Program in compliance with the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regulations to identify and attract potential student athletes. Provide referrals to prospective student athletes to academic and student services as appropriate. Maintain contact with prospective student athletes and provide prompt follow-up to inquiries.
- Scheduling - Plan and schedule competitions, tournaments, and events in collaboration with coaches within and outside of the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference and Region IX in coordination with academic schedules. Distribute schedules to student athletes, college personnel and media outlets. Work in collaboration with the Athletic Director to confirm final schedules.
- Practices - Plan and conduct all practices during pre-season, in-season, and off-season activities. Develop and direct the training of student athletes and assess individual athletic abilities and skill levels.
- Supervision/Discipline - Supervise and oversee student conduct at all practices, competitions, overnight travel, and special events at which the Softball Team is represented. Enforce all regulations outlined in the Central Community College Athletic Handbook, CCC Code of Student Conduct, and the NJCAA Handbook.
- Retention and Support - Oversee and support the academic progress, retention and matriculation of student athletes through mentoring, grade checks, supervision of required study halls, individual consultations with student athletes and faculty to address academic concerns. Refer student athletes to support services, programs and other resources as appropriate, including transfer and advancement.
- Eligibility - Support and maintain expectations to make academic progress and graduate student athletes. Work closely with Athletic Director and other college administrators, faculty and staff to ensure student athletes are academically eligible and in good standing with the institution.
- Travel - Plan and prepare travel logistics for the team, vehicle arrangements, hotel and meal accommodations. Responsible for all purchases made during all team travel including meals and entry fees. Maintain accurate records of purchasing card, use required accounting practices, and reconcile by required date.
- Injury Care - Provide initial care and treatment of minor injuries sustained by student athletes during practices. Coordinate the care and reporting of injuries to Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer to ensure prompt completion of documentation paperwork. Adhere to recommendations of medical professionals and/or athletic training services.
- Media - Communicate with media outlets (i.e. Columbus Telegram, KLIR radio, News Channel Nebraska and Omaha World Herald) and provide results following each game during in-season and post-season play. Update official game results on the NJCAA website and the CCC athletic website.
- Athlete Promotion - Develop and build relationships with four-year institutions and coaches to promote student transfer and advancement to four-year colleges and universities. Prepare and provide statistics, game footage, and personal evaluation of the student-athlete's academic and athletic status/abilities.
- Facilities Management - Oversee and monitor the athletic facilities (gymnasium, training room, weight room, locker room and turf fields) including supervision and maintenance of equipment usage to ensure a safe environment for all. Report any safety concerns to the Athletic Director.
- Fundraising - Plan and implement fundraising efforts to garner support for the Softball and Central Athletics, coordinating plans with the Athletic Director. Seek and pursue partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to secure sponsorships for major tournaments, serve on the planning committee for major athletic events which may including the CCC Raider Night, Raider Recognition, and the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony.
- Budget - Assist with identifying anticipated team expenditures and provides recommendations to Athletic Director on needed equipment and/or uniforms on an annual basis. Maintain inventory records for equipment and apparel. Manage expenses to ensure expenditures remain within approved funding levels.
- Camps - Coordinate, manage, promote, and conduct youth and team softball camps to be held on-campus on an annual basis. Seek and pursue partnerships with area high school softball coaches to deliver camp opportunities at off-campus sites throughout the CCC service area.
- All Star - Plan, direct, and implement all operations for the annual All-Star Softball games held on campus each summer. Collaborate with the Columbus Telegram Sports Editor to chair the selection process for identifying All-Star Softball team members from area high schools.
- Game Management - Attend and assist Athletic Director with CCC home athletic events. Serve as site administrator for home competitions as needed. Oversee and assist with administration of high school volleyball and basketball tournaments and All-Star Games as assigned by the Athletic Director.
- Instruction - Provide instruction for select courses as assigned by the Associate Dean of Instruction. Use a variety of instructional methods and delivery methods. Maintain accurate instructional records regarding student performance and attendance; utilize the college Learning Management System; meet required instructional deadlines; submit related instructional reports as required.
- Instructional program - Assist the instructional associate dean with the evaluation and revision of the program and participate in long-range planning; serve as academic advisor for assigned students within the Physical Education and related areas.
- Adhere to all Central Community College policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.
