Job Description:
The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse Universitys integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health, and recreation. The Health Promotion Specialist is an 11-month full-time position that serves as a key team member of the Health Promotion team by developing, supporting, and implementing health and wellness initiatives. In partnership with Health Promotion leadership, the Health Promotion Specialist will research, develop, and establish best practices to support a socioecological substance use prevention model.
The Health Promotion Specialist will have responsibility for substance use prevention content creation and delivery, coordination of services including the online Narcan order system, and in-person training and provide education to students referred for educational interventions. The Health Promotion Specialist will contribute to the overall mental health promotion initiative by researching, identifying, and implementing best practices for addressing topics including, but not limited to, sleep education and suicide prevention. The Health Promotion Specialist will directly work with students by facilitating resiliency programs and assist in training staff and students on suicide prevention.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree in health education, health promotion, community health, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1-2 years experience in the field of health promotion/public health.
- Experience creating and facilitating health-related educational workshops and trainings.
- Knowledge of best practices for cultivating mental health and resiliency.
- Knowledge of best practices for substance use harm reduction.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience creating collaborative relationships.
- Understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and public health.
- Understanding of the development, implementation, evaluation, and prioritization of health promotion programs in an institution of higher education.
- Ability to provide education through the lens of trauma-informed practices.
- Excellent presentation/oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.
- Proficient computer skills including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Teams, PowerPoint, Excel, database management.
Responsibilities:
- In partnership with Health Promotion leadership, research, develop, and establish best practices to support a socioecological substance use prevention model.
- Responsible for content creation and delivery, coordination of services including the online Narcan order system and in-person training and provide education to students referred for educational interventions.
- Serve as a facilitator for resiliency sessions as part of the overall mental health initiative.
- In partnership with Health Promotion leadership, research, develop, and establish best practices to support a socioecological model for mental health promotion, including but not limited to topics such as sleep education and suicide prevention. Serve as a suicide prevention trainer.
- Serve on Barnes and Student Experience Committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
