Duties & Responsibilities
The Housekeeper position represents the department with the University community and its visitors. They are expected to behave in a professional manner, keep informed of departmental and University policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to employment obligations including complying with attendance and clocking in and out on time; work with other University Facilities staff as part of a team, be flexible with schedule to accommodate emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal. Perform as a member of the University Student Commons (USC) housekeeping staff, performing regular shift cleaning and special projects as may be assigned. Ensure each day that the University Student Commons (USC) and surrounding outside areas are maintained in clean condition in compliance with USC Housekeeping Performance Standards (“Standards”) and the highest industry standards through individual work and contributing efforts as part of the overall housekeeping team.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Significant housekeeping experience.
- Knowledge of standard housekeeping procedures and other housekeeping equipment.
- Ability to work within established guidelines (independently and as part of a team).
- Ability to read, hear and follow spoken/written directions, instructions and schedules, and fill out reports with written descriptions of work completion.
- Ability to lift and carry at least 75 pounds routinely.
- Ability to kneel, stoop, bend over, climb, and walk for extended periods as required to perform work assignments.
- Ability to work in a diverse environment.
- Duties include, but are not limited to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage and special event support.
- Ability to clean up to 28,000-35,000 square feet of cleanable space per eight hour work day, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m, 40 hours per week.
- Ability to work rotating weekends required.
Preferred Qualifications
- A high school diploma or high school equivalency preferred.
- One year of custodial work experience is preferred.
- Requires a basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and university policies and procedures.
- Must be able to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to the supervisor and/or the Work Management Center.
- Will be required to complete a training program in building cleaning.
