HVAC Piping Skills for HVAC Instructor

Summary of Position

Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) is seeking a qualified Instructor to teach in the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration (HVA) program. This role involves providing high-quality instruction in alignment with RRCC and Colorado Community College System (CCCS) standards. The instructor will teach assigned courses, assess student performance, and contribute to the overall success of the program. Instructional delivery may be face-to-face, hybrid, or online, and may include day, evening, or weekend classes.

The ideal candidate will be a very experienced air conditioning and heating professional with recent, relevant industry experience and a deep understanding of HVAC technology. The instructor must be able to engage a diverse student population, apply effective teaching strategies, and adapt course content to meet varied learning needs. Key responsibilities include preparing class materials, maintaining accurate grading in D2L, submitting final grades in Banner, and responding to students and staff within 24-48 hours.

Instructors must demonstrate professionalism, respect, and patience, while setting clear expectations for academic performance. Attendance at department meetings and communication with the department chair are also required.

The schedule is weekdays from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with some responsibilities potentially occurring outside of these hours. The role may require up to 28 hours per week for a duration of up to 9 months, depending on departmental need and budget. The finalist must designate Colorado as their primary work location, including for any online instruction.

The compensation for this position is $1,177.73 to $1,826.60/credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt temporary staff position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Extensive experience with several or all of these areas:

Piping Fundamentals:

  1. In-depth knowledge of HVAC piping materials (copper, steel, PVC, PEX, CPVC), including applications, pros/cons, and installation.
  2. Proficient in pipe sizing and layout based on system design, load calculations, and specs.
  3. Familiar with key components: valves, fittings, flanges, and pressure regulators.
  4. Understanding of fluid dynamics, including flow, pressure drop, and velocity, for proper system design.

Piping Installation & Fabrication:

  1. Skilled in cutting, bending, soldering, and welding various piping materials.
  2. Proficient in threading, brazing, flaring, and crimping for secure, leak-proof connections.
  3. Knowledge of pipe insulation types (foam, fiberglass) and installation for energy efficiency and condensation control.

Required Qualifications

  • Qualifies for post-secondary CTE credential including 4000 non-teaching occupational hours within the last 7 years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • An associate degree from an accredited institution in related field
  • One semester full-time (or equivalent part-time) teaching experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse communities and supporting individuals from diverse populations, which may include but are not limited to, racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
  • This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Advertised Hourly Pay

The compensation for this position is $1,177.73 to $1,826.60/credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt temporary staff position. This position can work up to nine months, based on need and budget availability. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
