Identified Digital Collections & Repository Specialist

About the opportunity

This position has been designated for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only under the provisions of section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)

The University of Sydney Library is seeking an identified Digital Collections & Repository Specialist to support the management of Indigenous research data, digital collections, and culturally sensitive materials across the University.

This role sits across research data, digital repositories, and collections, with a focus on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP). As part of the Library’s Research & Collections team, you will contribute to key initiatives such as the Digital Sydney roadmap and myResearch Sydney, including the implementation of Figshare as the University’s research repository in 2026.

You will help ensure culturally appropriate practices are built into how repositories and collections are designed and managed from the outset. This supports Indigenous research and helps reduce risks associated with managing sensitive material.

Your key responsibilities will include

  • supporting the development and implementation of research data and digital collections practices aligned with ICIP principles
  • providing advice on the appropriate management, description, access and reuse of Indigenous research data and digital collections
  • assisting with the planning and configuration of Figshare and other Library platforms, ensuring ICIP principles are reflected in metadata, permissions and workflows
  • developing processes to identify, manage and provide access to culturally sensitive materials
  • working collaboratively with researchers, Indigenous stakeholders, Library and curatorial colleagues, ICT and the Research Office
  • contributing to staff capability development and continuous improvement in managing Indigenous research data and collections

About you

  • experience working with research data, digital repositories or digital collections
  • knowledge of Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles and Indigenous data governance
  • identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • experience developing or applying governance frameworks, policies or guidance
  • familiarity with repository platforms (e.g. Figshare) and metadata, access controls and workflows
  • experience working with culturally sensitive materials and appropriate access protocols.

If you don’t meet every requirement but bring relevant experience and a willingness to learn, we encourage you to apply.

Sponsorship / work rights for Australia

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to be eligible to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

Pre-employment checks and declarations

Your employment is conditional upon the successful completion of all pre-employment or background checks required for the role in terms satisfactory to the University. Also, to meet the University’s obligations under the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Eliminate Gender-Based Violence you will be asked to declare if you have been investigated for, or found to engaged in, sexual harm or gender-based violence in the course of previous employment or in a legal process. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
