About the programme
Our International Development (Global Studies) PhD is among the most diverse in the world, in terms of supervisors and students, and topics being researched. All our doctoral projects engage with the global challenges that face societies across the world today.
You’ll work with a range of experts from across the natural and social sciences whose cutting-edge original research has made a significant impact on individuals, institutions and societies around the world.
In the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, we host one of the UK’s largest doctoral research communities in International Development, and here students have a voice and an identity!

General requirements
- You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% of overall) in a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree.
- Your qualification should be in a relevant social sciences subject. In exceptional circumstances, you may be considered for the degree if you have a qualification in a different subject area. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.
Tuition Fees

- International (Non-residents): 44,186 AUD / year (approx. 23,500 GBP / year). International tuition fees apply to students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the study country. In some regions, like the EU/EEA, or under certain agreements, students from partner countries may also pay domestic fees.
