KTP Research Associate in Skin Immunology and 3D Tissue Models

Location: Labskin, Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ

Contract Type: Fixed Term (26 months)

This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) brings together Labskin Ltd and Aston University to create the first immune‑competent 3D human skin model incorporating immune cells. This innovation aims to provide an advanced alternative to animal models for developing therapies, toxicology screening, and disease research.

The project will focus on enhancing Labskin’s existing full‑thickness human skin model by incorporating macrophages—immune cells essential for wound repair, scarring prevention, and disease regulation. This next‑generation model will enable more accurate in vitro analysis of skin health, immunity, and disease mechanisms.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should hold an MSc or higher in cell biology or immunology. A PhD is preferred due to the specialist nature of the work, though MSc/MRes graduates with extensive practical training will also be considered.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Strong proficiency in cell culture, ideally long‑term cultures
  • Experience with immune assays (e.g., ELISA, antibody‑based cell staining)
  • Excellent aseptic technique
  • Ability to work independently with strong problem‑solving skills
  • Good IT and data‑analysis abilities
  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques quickly (with academic support)

Desirable skills:

  • Experience in industry or commercial R&D environments
  • Familiarity with 3D cell culture models
  • Microscopy, histology, or pathology understanding
  • Self‑motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Effective time management and ability to meet deadlines
  • Proactive attitude

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop an integrated immune cell culture system that accurately models human skin immunity
  • Explore immune mechanisms and contribute to translational skin research using the new model
  • Overcome technical challenges in merging existing skin biology models with new immune components
  • Manage project time, resources, and documentation, including record‑keeping to support IP protection

Personal Attributes

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work within a cross‑disciplinary project team
  • Leadership qualities, strong organisation, and commitment to achieving project milestones
  • High motivation, adaptability, and career focus
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Enthusiasm for innovative approaches and new technologies

Additional Benefits

  • Up to £4,333 for professional development
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Professional support, mentorship, and mental‑health resources

Career Prospects

60% of KTP Associates secure employment with the partner company upon completion.

This KTP is funded by Labskin and Innovate UK. Applicants must understand the KTP structure and may be eligible for the Global Talent Visa (Endorsed Funder route). Candidates must hold immigration permission covering the full 26‑month contract.
