Coordinate physical science, physics, astronomy, and chemistry laboratory and field activities: maintaining budget and ordering of materials and supplies; scheduling, hiring and training of laboratory assistants; preparing materials and equipment needed for laboratory and field instruction; maintaining inventory and equipment; providing security of laboratory and storage areas; troubleshooting and repair of broken equipment; maintaining and providing necessary records. Respond to requests and needs of teaching faculty.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain current knowledge and skill in various scientific disciplines and their related supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of, set up, monitor, test, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and be able to repair and maintain numerous and diverse varieties of science supplies and equipment. Arrange for outside repairs when needed. Coordinate the ordering of supplies and new equipment: arrange for processing and follow through on delivery.
  • Provide safe and secure storage of lab and related equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Ensure safe disposal of all hazardous materials and supplies.
  • Maintain current inventory and organize stock rooms.
  • Using input from faculty, create and maintain a laboratory manual outlining laboratory experiments and the preparation necessary for each course offered.
  • Implement and enforce a system of safety procedures for all laboratory personnel.
  • Recommend hiring of other employees assigned to the laboratories; train, schedule, and supervise lab assistants.
  • Develop and maintain science supplies and equipment inventories using mainframe and microcomputers.
  • Set up and maintain laboratory computers and interface equipment.
  • Implement a system for compliance with safety requirements of government agencies.
  • Communicate and work with faculty and lab staff on all assigned duties.
  • Maintain budgets and accounts as assigned.
  • Use college computer system (currently Datatel) to ensure timely and cost effective purchasing.
  • Participate in college activities as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

CHEMISTRY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain current knowledge of, be able to work safely with, and dispose of a large variety of inorganic and organic compounds needed for classes. Must be able to accurately prepare solutions and unknowns for experiments from stock solutions and compounds. Must be able to perform basic troubleshooting of experiments. Must maintain and ensure implementation of chemical inventory. Be able to utilize, maintain and train support personnel with laboratory equipment including glassware, IR, GC and pH meters. Must be comfortable with inorganic and organic chemical nomenclature.

PHYSICS and PHYSICAL SCIENCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain current knowledge of, be able to work safely with and dispose of solutions of various natures and concentrations. Use diagnostic test equipment. Interpret electronic schematic diagrams and mechanical blueprints. Use hand tools and soldering techniques as necessary. Be able to maintain, calibrate, program, perform minor repairs on, and otherwise effectively employ the use of stand-alone and computer-interfaced electronic instrumentation. Be able to utilize, maintain and train support personnel as needed.

ASTRONOMY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain observatory, telescopes, and other materials to be used in astronomy courses. Assist with set up and operation of observatory.

Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in Science and/or Health Area (Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or Biology preferred) or equivalent education as appropriate for assignment from an accredited institution is required. Transcripts must be submitted with the application.
