Job Description
The Laboratory Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of teaching and research laboratories within the School/Department. The role ensures laboratory infrastructure, equipment, and materials are ready and compliant for practical classes and research activities by providing day-to-day technical support, maintaining equipment, enforcing safety and regulatory requirements, and assisting academic staff and students with lab setup, troubleshooting, and standard procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Procurement support for Quantum Communications Lab (QCL) and Quantum Engineering Labs (QEL).
- Safety management and organization for Quantum Communications Lab and Quantum Engineering Labs.
- ECE safety committee member: laser license record custodian, CORP-pass holder for NEA license applications/renewals, and safety inspection duties.
- Support CommNet Lab procurement if needed.
Qualifications
- Degree in Engineering/Applied Science (or equivalent)
- At least 4 years’ experience as a lab tech in a local university supporting engineering and technology research.
- Hands-on ability to set up, operate, and perform basic maintenance/calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Working knowledge of laboratory safety practices; able to follow SOPs, conduct/comply with risk controls, and support audits.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve common equipment and experimental issues during lab sessions.
- Organised and detail-oriented; able to manage inventory, equipment logs, and basic procurement/receiving tasks.
- Good communication and service mindset to support students, instructors, and researchers in a busy lab environment.
- Open to Fixed Term Contract.
