The Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul invites applications for the Large Animal Medical Director in a contract (non-tenure) faculty position. The Large Animal Medical Director will oversee the Piper Equine Hospital and Large Animal Hospital within the College’s Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) with an estimated effort of 40%. The remainder of the role will be determined depending on candidate interest and departmental needs and may include didactic teaching in the DVM curriculum, performing clinical service and/or research.
The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, consistent with Collegiate and University policies. The appointment may be 75%-100%.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as Medical Director for the Piper Equine and Large Animal Hospitals, overseeing clinical operations, policy development, staffing, personnel management, and quality assurance, under delegated authority of the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
- Collaborate with the Chair of Veterinary Population Medicine on issues pertaining to large animal clinicians, including effort allocation and other faculty affairs.
- Collaborate with Section Heads to convey large animal needs at hospital leadership meetings, facilitate information flow to faculty, and support staffing decisions that ensure effective hospital operations.
- Work closely with the VMC Director of Operations to support hospital operational efficiency.
- Participate in budget planning, capital equipment strategy, operational data review, and accreditation reporting.
- Promote a culture of safety, well-being, and professional growth for hospital personnel.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Eligible for Minnesota veterinary licensure (please see the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine website for more details)
- Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated commitment to community and belonging
Preferred Qualifications:
- Clinical experience in large animal practice
- Teaching experience in veterinary medicine
