About the Project

Laser-assisted studies of shapes/sizes and decay properties of exotic nuclei at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) and RIKEN (Tokyo, Japan) "This PhD project focuses on studies of collective properties of exotic nuclei, in particular on their shapes/radii. In the last two decades, through technological, experimental and theoretical advances, the situation in such studies has changed dramatically. With the use of advanced production and detection techniques much more detailed and precise information can now be obtained for new regions of nuclei by means of radioactive ion beams.

The project combines the application of nuclear physics and atomic physics techniques, in particular based on application of lasers, e.g. the Resonance Ionisation Laser Ion Source (RILIS) and the ISOLDE on-line mass separator at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) or at the KISS separator at Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (RIBF) at RIKEN(Tokyo, Japan).

At ISOLDE, charge radii, nuclear shapes and decay properties are being investigated, while at RIKEN, the emphasis is made on production of new isotopes, and measurements of their masses, half-lives and decay properties. Such information is indispensable for reliable prediction of the path of astrophysical r-process and its termination by fission.

The experiments will involve the use of different types of particle detectors (e.g. for alpha/beta/gamma spectroscopy), and the student will also learn relevant atomic physics techniques.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to travel to several experiments at CERN, and in case of RIKEN – possibly stay for extended periods in Tokyo.

Funding Notes

This PhD studentship will cover the tuition fee at the home rate (£5,006 for the 2025/26 academic year), an annual stipend at the standard research council rate for a period of up to 3.5 years (£20,780 for the 2025/26 academic year) and a research training and support grant (RTSG).

There are also a limited number of full studentships in the School (covering the international fee) which are available for exceptional candidates of any nationality; International applicants are therefore also welcome to apply. Please note funding for international fees is in competition with other projects.
