Position Summary

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at Winston-Salem State University is seeking a knowledgeable and service-oriented Lead Business & Technical Applications Specialist. OIT works to support and strengthen the academic, administrative, and associated research needs of all faculty, staff, and students at Winston-Salem State University through the provisioning, support, maintenance, availability, and outreach of Information Technology Services. This position is a member of the Banner Applications Solutions (BAS) programming team supporting the university’s ERP administrative application suite, Ellucian Banner and the respective ancillary products (One Card, TouchNet, Atomic, etc.). The Lead Business & Technical Applications Specialist serves as a lead team member and key liaison between technical teams and business units, ensuring systems are reliable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals. In addition, this position functions as a senior data analyst and lead report writer, providing strategic insights to support decision-making.

Responsibilities of the Lead Business & Technical Applications Specialist include:

  • Provide functional and technical support for the University’s ERP system (Banner) and related integrated applications.
  • Develop, maintain, and support reporting solutions using SQL and enterprise reporting tools (e.g., WebFOCUS, Power BI, or similar).
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical solutions, reports, and dashboards that support institutional decision-making.
  • Serve as a liaison between business units (HR, Finance, Enrollment Management) and technical teams to ensure alignment of system functionality and reporting needs.
  • Lead and support system upgrades, testing, and implementations, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and security across applications and reporting outputs.
  • Provide end-user support, training, and documentation for systems and reporting tools.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to support integrations and system enhancements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts to enhance business processes, automation, and reporting capabilities.

Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies

Normal Work Schedule
Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

This position requires a full-time onsite presence for the first six (6) months to support onboarding, training, collaboration, and operational continuity.
Following this period, the role will transition to a hybrid work schedule, typically consisting of two (2) remote days and three (3) onsite days per week, based on departmental needs.
During peak operational periods (e.g., registration, system upgrades, or major project implementations), additional onsite presence may be required.

Department Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting enterprise applications, preferably within higher education environments.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as Ellucian Banner or similar platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience developing reports and dashboards using SQL and reporting tools.
  • Experience supporting functional areas such as Human Resources, Finance, or Enrollment Management.
  • Experience with system integrations, upgrades, testing, and production support.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Strong proficiency in SQL for data extraction, analysis, and report development (joins, subqueries, aggregations, performance tuning).
  • Experience with reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or WebFOCUS.
  • Ability to design and develop complex reports, dashboards, and data visualizations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to data accuracy and integrity.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business terms.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a team environment.
