The Department of Biology and Geosciences within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Indiana University Northwest seeks to fill a Lecturer in Geology and STEM Center Director position. The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The teaching load is to be half time during the Fall, Spring, and Summer (a 2/2/1 FTE equivalent) with the remainder devoted to directing STEM Center programs.
Lecturer in Geology Teaching Responsibilities: We seek a broadly educated geologist with demonstrated commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. This position will contribute to majors in geoscience, environmental science, and sustainability, as well as general education courses. The individual will have a focus on STEM student success, the ability to implement sound pedagogy for both in-person and online instruction, and a commitment to undergraduate engagement.
Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and early-career courses in earth science, geology, or geography (including geographic information systems [GIS]) and upper-level geology and geography courses based on the successful candidate's areas of expertise and departmental needs. Course assignments may include courses in GIS, field methods and laboratory techniques, and climate change science, and foundational courses at the 100- and 200-level including introductory courses in Earth science, historical geology, and a first-year seminar in geoscience. Expertise in GIS, surficial processes and systems (geomorphology, Quaternary, glacial/climate systems, soils), and other expertise that will complement departmental expertise in mineralogy, ocean science, petrology, sedimentology/stratigraphy, and structural geology is particularly valued.
With the Fall 2026 reorganization, the Departments of Geosciences and Biology merged and offer B.S. and B.A. degrees in Biological and Physical Sciences that will include majors in biology, environmental science (B.S. only), and geoscience, and an online B.A. degree in sustainability, shared among five IU regional campuses. Additionally, the department contributes to programs in science education and a master's program in liberal studies.
Core teaching responsibilities include a 6-hour equivalent per semester teaching load in the fall and spring semesters, and a 3-hour equivalent teaching load in the summer in face-to-face or online modalities. The teaching load may be unequally distributed based on departmental needs. Additionally, the successful candidate will actively engage in service to the department, campus, discipline, and the community.
