The Department of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Reading is looking to appoint a critical human geographer for the post of Lecturer in Human Geography.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of creative and innovative undergraduate teaching and implement a research programme that engages with issues of power and inequity, seeking progressive societal change. We welcome applications from critical human geographers with research interests and expertise that complement and extend those of other human geographers within the Department - the Human Geography Research Cluster (HGRC) - and demonstrably relate to the Global Development Research Division (GDRD), within which the HGRC sits. The HGRC is committed to research in pursuit of more equitable, just and/or environmentally progressive futures and has expertise including cultural, social, participatory, development, environmental, political, urban and feminist geographies. Please indicate in your application how you will complement and extend the existing expertise of the HGRC with research that engages with issues of power and inequity to seek progressive societal change.

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of creative and innovative teaching across undergraduate Human Geography programmes. We are seeking applications from critical human geographers who can support undergraduate teaching and the supervision and marking of undergraduate dissertations. We are seeking a candidate aspiring to teaching and research excellence, who can undertake and contribute to classroom and field teaching across undergraduate Geography programmes, offer dissertation support and doctoral student supervision, undertake independent and collaborative research, develop high quality publications and competitive grant applications, and contribute to administrative and citizenship roles and activities.

You will have

  • A PhD in Human Geography or a related subject
  • The ability to produce excellent research publications
  • Experience of internal or external research grant application preparation and the ability and/or potential to secure external research funding
  • The ability to prepare and deliver creative and innovative undergraduate teaching in Human Geography
  • The ability to teach a range of core Human Geography concepts and qualitative methods
