Scope of Job:

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student body as a full-time lecturer in Philosophy beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year. The Department of Philosophy at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a pluralistic department that seeks outstanding teachers who care deeply about students and enjoy engaging meaningfully with them. AOS: Open AOC: Open, but we would like to increase our course offerings to include Eastern philosophies and religions, Philosophy for Children and other innovative pedagogies. This is a teaching job, and it comes with no expectation of research. The primary mode of instruction is in-person, but the department might also have needs for online and hybrid modalities of teaching.
UTRGV has a thriving philosophy department full of majors and minors who are active in several different clubs, like Weekly Movie Night, PhilStairs (an undergraduate research group for philosophy of AI and technology), Phil and Sophie's (our weekly philosophy club), the Religious Studies club, and more. Successful candidates for this position will have a commitment to contributing positively to a vibrant departmental and student community.
Some of our programs include: Philosophy as a Way of Life (PWOL), which is a method of instruction centered on student-led dialogue, a Pre-Law Concentration, a Religious Studies Minor, Bilingual instruction, Contextualized Sociolinguistic Practice (CSP) instruction, Service Learning and Community Engagement, a Bioethics masters program and a faculty Pedagogy group, to name a few.
We seek candidates with experience in innovative pedagogies, and who will inspire students to minor, major, or double-major in Philosophy while teaching some of our lower-division courses such as: Intro to Philosophy; Critical Thinking; Introduction to Social and Political Philosophy; Ethics, Happiness, & The Good Life; Ethics; and Ethics, Technology, & Society. We seek a candidate who will strengthen both our undergraduate curriculum and departmental community.
We are especially interested in candidates with relevant experience and/ or knowledge of teaching bilingual, bicultural, or biliterate students, since UTRGV is a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 90% Hispanic student body.
Complete application includes: 1) letter of interest, 2) CV, 3) list of three references, 4) teaching portfolio (upload under ‘Other Document') and 5) unofficial graduate transcripts. Candidates may design their teaching portfolios in whatever way best communicates their excellence in teaching, but they should include syllabi and complete student evaluations with all student comments for the past two years of teaching if available.

Additional Information:

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
