About The Courtauld

For nearly a century, the Courtauld Institute of Art has been a unique centre of expertise.

The Courtauld is one of the foremost centres in the world for education and research in conservation. We run three-year MAs in the conservation of easel paintings (18 students) and wall paintings (6-12 students), and 12-month MAs in Preventive Conservation (12 students) and Buddhist Art History and Conservation (12 students, jointly taught with the History of Art department).

The Role

We are seeking a passionate Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader to advance the Courtauld’s teaching and research on the Conservation of Buddhist Heritage. The successful candidate, depending on qualifications and experience, will be appointed at Grade 7 Lecturer or Grade 8 Senior Lecturer / Reader. What We’re Looking For

The postholder will design and deliver teaching and supervision on the MA Art History and Conservation of Buddhist Heritage, as well as contributing to other MA Conservation programmes at The Courtauld. Working collaboratively with colleagues within the Courtauld and with our partners, they will promote excellence in teaching and research. The successful candidate will maintain an active research profile, produce significant publications, and secure external funding for research projects. They will demonstrate intellectual leadership as part of the Robert H.N.Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Art and Conservation at the Courtauld, fostering new approaches that advance the field and strengthen the Courtauld’s global academic standing. Alongside their academic responsibilities, the postholder will contribute to departmental administration and governance, supporting the Courtauld’s strategic aims and reputation for research-led teaching, critical inquiry, and innovation. The role will require periods of extended travel leading study trips and fieldwork.

The postholder will:

  • Hold a recognised qualification in conservation, or conservation science or equivalent experience
  • Understand developments in conservation theory and practice related specifically to the conservation of Buddhist heritage, with relevant practical experience
  • Be able to speak about your research and teach a variety of audiences, including students at all levels and the public
  • Have ambitious plans for your research and for the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Research Centre for Buddhist Art and Conservation programme
  • Be collaborative and enjoy working as part of a team to deliver teaching and research

Role Details

  • Permanent, full-time (35 hours per week)
  • Salary:
    • Grade 7 Lecturer £52,947; OR
    • Grade 8 Senior Lecturer / Reader £64,089 per annum
