Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We are seeking a Lecturer in Exercise & Sport Science to join our School within the Faculty of Science in a full-time, permanent (tenure-track equivalent) position. This is a balanced research–teaching–service role, well suited to a candidate with expertise in exercise physiology and experience teaching and conducting innovative research in the New Zealand context.
This is a unique opportunity for a candidate with a proven track record in both academic excellence and Māori partnership. The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in strengthening the School’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi by embedding Māori perspectives into curriculum and pedagogy, expanding Māori-focused research, and supporting Māori students.
In this role, you will lead and contribute to teaching broadly across the undergraduate programme, with a particular emphasis on exercise physiology content. You will also have opportunities to teach and supervise at higher levels within your areas of expertise. Your teaching will be informed by the latest research and incorporate innovative methods that engage our diverse student body and support Māori and Pacific student success.
As a Lecturer, you will develop an original and impactful research programme. This includes publishing high‑quality research, seeking external funding, and collaborating with colleagues and community partners. You will also have opportunities to contribute your disciplinary expertise to high‑performance sport science services and student‑athlete support initiatives.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- A PhD in Exercise or Sport Science.
- An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Exercise or Sport Science.
- Evidence of curriculum design and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- An active research programme in a field related to exercise sciences, with a publication track record and potential to attract external funding.
- Recognised contribution to Māori advancement in science, including kaupapa Māori approaches and mātauranga Māori integration.
- Tertiary teaching experience delivering research-informed, inclusive teaching that supports Māori and Pacific student success.
This is a permanent, full-time 1 FTE (40 hours per week) role.
Remuneration: $99,788 to $119,204 per annum, dependent on skills and experience

Our team forms New Zealand’s leading academic unit in Exercise Sciences, composed of a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of academics, researchers, and practitioners working at the forefront of exercise, sport, and rehabilitation sciences.
We share a common focus on understanding how physical activity and exercise can be used to improve health, support recovery, and optimise performance across diverse contexts. Drawing on expertise in physiotherapy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, movement neuroscience, and exercise & sport psychology, we teach across the continuum from clinical training to high‑performance sport practice. Our research spans fundamental discovery science through to applied translational work, contributing to improved health, evidence‑based rehabilitation, and enhanced performance across the lifespan.
