Minimum Qualifications

MA in Japanese or a closely related field (in hand by time of appointment); Doctorate in relevant field required for appointment as Teaching Assistant Professor
Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English
Experience teaching Japanese at the college level

Commitment to supporting the Japanese program in co-curricular activities
Specialization in lower- and intermediate-level language instruction
Experience with hybrid or online instructional delivery
Interest in developing and teaching culture-based courses

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is home to a diverse faculty, and offers a variety of courses in language, culture, literature, and linguistics. These courses support General Education as well as the department's programs, which include majors in East Asian Languages and Cultures, French and Francophone Studies, German, Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and initial licensure programs for K-12 French and Spanish teachers. The department also offers minors in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and TESL/Applied Linguistics, two years of instruction in Latin, and graduate programs in French and Spanish K-12 and College Teaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate Japanese courses, primarily at the beginning and intermediate levels (4-4 course load: eight courses per academic year) face-to-face on campus in Boone
Actively support the Japanese program through co-curricular activities (e.g., language tables, cultural workshops)
Contribute to departmental service and engage with the broader campus academic community
