Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Islam and Education Studies
The Markfield Institute is a private higher education institution located in Markfield, Leicestershire. It conducts research, offers validated undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and delivers professional development courses.
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Teaching Fellow in Islam and Education Studies. The successful candidate will play a key role in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision, with a particular focus on Islamic perspectives on contemporary educational theory. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed academic to contribute to the intellectual development of students and to the advancement of scholarship and research at the intersection of education studies and Islamic thought.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in education studies from both Islamic and conventional perspectives and related subjects.
- Design and convene modules in areas such as Islamic educational philosophy, pedagogy, curriculum studies, and contemporary issues in education.
- Supervise postgraduate dissertations, including Master’s theses and PhD research.
- Contribute to curriculum development and programme enhancement.
- Engage in scholarly research and produce publications of an international standard.
- Participate in academic administration and institutional activities.
- Contribute to outreach, partnerships, and community engagement where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- A PhD in Education or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Education studies and Islamic approaches to education, including classical and contemporary perspectives.
- Experience of teaching in higher education, particularly at the postgraduate level.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research, including PhD students.
- Evidence of research activity or clear potential for high-quality academic publications.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Criteria
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCertHE or equivalent).
- Experience in curriculum design and programme development.
- Familiarity with contemporary debates in education policy, pedagogy, and ethics.
- Experience of working in diverse, multicultural academic environments.
