LEO Lecturer I - Spanish Fall 2026

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) invites applications for a Lecturer I position in the Spanish section beginning on August 25, 2026, and running through December 31, 2026.

With a history dating back to 1846, RLL is one of the longest-running departments in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). We offer four undergraduate majors, four undergraduate minors, and three doctoral degrees. In addition to these degree programs, RLL's Elementary Language Program teaches the majority of UM-Ann Arbor's undergraduate students whose school or college has a language requirement.

The department has a strong commitment to supporting and inclusive community and actively seeks to teach not only the languages and cultures of France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain but also the legacy of their colonial activities across the globe. The Spanish section seeks to teach Spanish as a global language in a way that decenters Spain and offers a more expansive perspective of the Spanish speaking world. For more information about the department's programs, mission, and values, please visit https://lsa.umich.edu/rll.

This is a full-time, in-person position for Fall 2026, with the possibility of renewal.

This position is responsible for teaching three courses in fall. Depending on departmental need, the Lecturer I will teach sections in the Elementary Language Program and/or upper-level courses in the fields of Peninsular, Latinx Studies, or Latin American literature and culture. In addition, lecturers are expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction. The anticipated effort for this position is 100%.

Applicants must have fluency in Spanish and English, as well as prior experience teaching courses in Spanish as a foreign/second language. Minimum required education level is an MA or equivalent experience.

Advanced training or degree. PhD in Hispanic Studies, Romance Languages, or a closely related field. Prior experience with the communicative method of language instruction and teaching in a flipped classroom. Experience teaching inclusive concepts in the context of a language course. Experience teaching additional Romance languages.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
