Life Science Technician I (Monday to Friday, 9:30am-6:00pm)

This position will be 100% FTE. Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 6:00pm.

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Life Science Technician I for a funded basic/translation research laboratory to work in respiratory muscle biology and to perform the following duties and responsibilities under supervision: a variety of cellular a molecular assays in muscle biology and cancer biology to potentially include fluorescence microscopy, gel electrophoresis, western and northern blots, computerized image analysis, PCR, tissue culture; handle and breed transgenic mouse colonies; assist with pre-, intra- and post-operative support for small animal surgical procedures, including ultimately performance of procedures independently (may administer medications, anesthesia, physiological monitoring, data collection, surgical assistance and necropsy procedures).

The LST I will be responsible for preparation of laboratories and sterilization necessary items for scheduled studies. The keeping of detailed records and orderly laboratory is required and the ability to process and handle tissue specimens for microscopy. Additionally, assistance to the PI (MD) and a research scientist (Phd) in protocol-writing, grant-writing, and manuscript writing may be asked.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4-year undergraduate degree in (or extensive coursework in) Biology, Physiology, or closely related field.
  • 4-months experience in laboratory work or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience/training (e.g. two years of college biology laboratories) highly preferred.
  • Good written, verbal communication skills and demonstrated professionalism in working with colleagues, and both internal and external laboratory users.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

One year’s employment experience in laboratory work or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience/training (e.g., one year of college science).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $33.33 (Step 1) to $40.19 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
