Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Nursing Manager, the Medical Assistant provides both clinical and administrative support within Student Health Services at San Diego State University. The position plays a key role in delivering high-quality, student-centered healthcare by assisting medical providers with routine clinical procedures, patient care activities, and health center operations.

The Medical Assistant performs a broad range of clinical duties within scope of practice, including preparing patients for examinations, collecting and recording vital signs, administering medications and immunizations, performing basic diagnostic tests, and assisting practitioners during medical procedures. The role also includes maintaining exam rooms, handling medical equipment, and supporting infection control standards.

In addition, the incumbent supports front-office and administrative functions such as patient check-in, appointment scheduling, maintaining electronic health records, coordinating patient flow, and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. The position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented healthcare environment.

This role contributes to the overall mission of Student Health Services by promoting accessible, inclusive, and compassionate care that supports student well-being and academic success.

In this role, the Coordinator will:

  • Support healthcare providers in delivering clinical care, including patient preparation, vital sign collection, and assisting with procedures
  • Administer medications and immunizations under supervision and perform routine diagnostic tests
  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked clinical spaces in accordance with safety and infection control standards
  • Provide administrative support including scheduling, patient check-in, and medical record management
  • Coordinate patient flow and communicate effectively with students, providers, and campus partners
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable regulations

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform clinical support duties such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, TB testing, and basic diagnostic procedures
  • Assist in examinations and treatments while ensuring patient comfort and safety
  • Manage front-office operations including appointment scheduling, phone inquiries, and patient registration
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record system
  • Monitor and restock medical supplies and support clinic operations across departments as needed
  • Provide inclusive, respectful, and culturally responsive care to a diverse student population

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June 2027 as the anticipated off month.
  • This position is designated as non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego

Department Summary

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

The mission of SDSU Student Health Services is to provide high-quality, convenient, student- focused medical care in a safe and welcoming environment, actively partnering with our student- patients to help them achieve and maintain healthy lives in support of their personal and academic success.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California does require that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice. This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully. CSU-specific requirements are as follows:

  1. Most common incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs. In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies.
  2. At the discretion of the student health center director, an in-house campus-training program may be developed according to the guidelines established by the Medical Board of California. In this case, a CSU physician must document and certify in writing that the formal training and clinical practice hours required by the Medical Board of California to perform the duties of a Medical Assistant have been completed successfully.

Key Qualifications

  • Progressively responsible professional experience with demonstrated evidence of administrative and clinical capability and the talent to carry out the responsibilities of this position.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, the public, and colleagues in a professional setting.
  • Proficiency in administrative and clinical systems, including practice management software, electronic health records, multi-line phone systems, and basic Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, email).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating adaptability to changing assignments and accuracy in processing detailed information (e.g., names, numbers, and records).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality, particularly in handling sensitive patient information and clinical or clerical tasks of moderate complexity.
  • Ability to independently perform and troubleshoot routine clerical procedures, including applying policies and procedures, identifying errors, and resolving issues efficiently.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate office procedures and information clearly, including explaining policies and responding to routine inquiries.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Current AED/CPR Certification
  • Medical Assistant Certification

Compensation:

Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department's budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 2 ($3,531).
  • Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,461-$4,846 per month (Step 1 - Step 18).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
