Job Description Summary
Medical assistants under limited supervision are an integral part of the clinical staff in the Student Health Service. Responsible for greeting patients and accompanying them through the examination. Qualified candidates will support the clinical provider (physician, advanced practice nurse or physician assistant) in documenting histories, explaining and performing treatment procedures or tests and answering questions as appropriate. Medical assistants administer immunizations, Point of care testing, laboratory tests including blood draws and taking other specimens from patients. Familiarity with electronic health records and appropriate documentation is required.
Job Responsibilities
- Handle protected health information (PHI) according to HIPAA and other privacy and Student Health Service (SHS) guidelines. Document care and information within charts. Orient nursing students to operations within SHS.
- Clinical duties - taking patient histories, take and record vitals accurately, document chief complaint and associated facts, administer appropriate tests including vision, height, weight as appropriate.
- Provide low level disinfection in clinical areas, clean rooms after patient care, stock clinical areas with appropriate supplies and testing materials.
- Provide support to providers and nursing staff as appropriate.
- Perform laboratory tests including but not limited urine, hemoglobin, glucose finger sticks and collect other blood and serum samples to send to outside laboratory.
- Perform and record routine tests such as blood pressure measurement, EKG, and basic wound care. Administer immunizations under limited supervision.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of a certified medical assistant program required. Certification preferred.
- 1 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Experience with venipuncture, finger stick, laboratory procedures, EKG and other medical testing required.
- Excellent communication and patient care skills required.
- Comfortable making independent judgement and working with college and graduate students.
- Hours are varied and require nights and weekends.
