Medical Assistant (Substitute)
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction from the appropriate level manager or administrator, perform specialized front office and back-office functions in support of the Health and Wellness Center (HWC) at Saddleback College/Student Health Center (SHC) at Irvine Valley College; screens callers and visitors; schedules appointments; maintains patient records; and assists medical staff with health-related programs, exams, back-office duties, and medical inventory; utilize computerized information systems to perform job duties. Perform phlebotomy and immunizations, along with other medical procedures that are typical for a Medical Assistant.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Provide medical assistance to registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and medical doctors using universally accepted procedures; administer basic comfort measures; assist in performing medical observations and screening tests; obtain patient vital signs; assist with physicals; provide medications and injections as directed; sterilize instruments; draw blood; collect specimens; clean and dress wounds; assist with emergency care, First Aid, CPR and AED; contact laboratory and diagnostic imaging services; implement policies for disinfection and handling of contaminated waste.
Communicate information; greet students and visitors; determine nature of visit; schedule appointments; collect fees; alert clinical staff; address student crisis situations; inspect documents; maintain EMR system; operate office equipment; maintain student accident insurance records; abide by confidentiality practices; assist with education and promotion programs; assist with supplies inventory; monitor cleanliness of areas; attend meetings and trainings; route mail; provide training to lower-level staff; establish cooperative working relationships.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of standard medical assistant principles, procedures, techniques, and practices including phlebotomy and injections; First Aid, CPR, and AED; health center operations; medical office practices; safety and sanitation; customer service; confidentiality laws including FERPA and HIPAA.
Ability to perform front and back-office functions; triage medical situations; operate medical equipment; remain calm in emergencies; communicate effectively; provide excellent customer service; exercise good judgment; maintain records; work under pressure; work with diverse populations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or equivalent and completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Training Program. One year experience as a Medical Assistant including front and back-office duties, phlebotomy and injections. Experience in public health or school health preferred.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Current valid Medical Assistant Certification; valid First Aid Certificate; valid CPR/AED certificate; valid Phlebotomy Technician Certificate desirable; valid California driver’s license.
