Mozart Fellowship for 2027

Job Description

Applications are invited for Aotearoa New Zealand’s premier music composition residency – the Mozart Fellowship for 2027

Applications are invited for the Fellowship year 2027 from composers normally resident in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Mozart Fellowship is one of New Zealand’s most valuable, prestigious and long‑established composer residencies, supporting New Zealand composers since 1969. It enables a composer to focus full‑time on their creative work while becoming part of the vibrant arts community of Dunedin and the University of Otago | Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka.

The Fellowship aims to support the development of original composition, foster engagement with contemporary music, and connect composers with the University community.

Residency in Ōtepoti during the Fellowship period is expected

What the Fellowship offers

  • A 12‑month, full‑time position (February 2027 – January 2028).
  • A stipend equivalent to a University Lecturer’s salary.
  • A dedicated office within the Music Programme, School of Performing Arts.
  • Access to the University Library and support services.
  • Access to the University’s musical, academic, and artistic community.
  • Optional opportunities to share, perform, or discuss your work with staff and students of The School of Performing Arts.

Who can apply

  • You might be emerging or established — what matters is the authenticity of your voice and your readiness to make the most of a year devoted to composition.
  • Applicants must be 27 and meet the New Zealand eligibility pathways outlined in the Conditions of Award. In exceptional circumstances, criteria may be waived.
